About elprism.org

ABOUT US

EL PRISM Charity is a new initiative that was started during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are a UK based charity empowering women and children in villages in The Gambia. We write and sell books to support charitable causes.

The concept started over two decades ago, but we’re only just going public. EL PRISM had been collecting second-hand clothing, furniture, school equipment and stationery, donating it to children and women in The Gambia. However, during the height of the pandemic, many have approached us for financial support, but we had to turn them away because we didn’t have the means to help them all. We did what we could at the time, but we needed more.

Today we have crafts and books for the curious and literary minds for inspiration, enjoyment and for a more sustainable way of funding. We also rely on your generous donations to fund our education sponsorship programmes.

objectives and how we offer support

  • Carers support – skills and respite care facilities. Give them avenues and signpost them to the right agencies

  • We sponsor children from impoverished families to stay in full-time education by paying for their tuition fees, assist in purchasing school uniforms and study materials. As well as making sure children are well taken care of at home in order to maintain healthy well-being, physically and mentally.

  • Disabled children. Making sure they have access to education and a safe outdoor environment without subject to discrimination. Here the main logistical challenge is to make sure we encourage the family to come forward and register with us. We promote diversity in inclusion at grass root levels.

  • Women with Small Gardens as a means of sustenance.  We aim to support them in buying their products and save them the trip to the market. Offer them a small means-tested grant in case of family medical emergencies. We also offer skills training workshops and we help promote and support women craftsmanship.

  • Harnessing and strengthening community resources to support people to become self-reliant and to contribute to their communities.

  • Mental health victims support. For many years behind the scenes, we have supported many people suffering from mental health with medical costs, travel and living expenses. Often they are treated as social outcasts and left isolated.

  • Raise awareness and encourage people to talk about their mental health. Often people are stigmatised and live in fear rather than seek help.

  • Victims support groups and rehabilitation groups. In collaboration with The Gambia police child invention unit. Provide them with a platform to share their experiences and help them heal.

  • Sponsor an Orphan by providing them with clothing and shoes. But we would love to be able to provide them with education and food and sustenance and a safe environment.

  • Playground schemes, safe outdoor play areas for children in  remote parts of The Gambia. We started small in a village called Nyofelleh.

  • Provide access to Computers at School. Support a child’s learning and set them a benchmark with skills for life.

  • Healthy Living and Eat well scheme. Provide reusable water bottles and encourage children to drink to stimulate a healthy mind.

  • School dinner hall appeal. With a fully functional kitchen to promote health and wellbeing.

  • Medical Equipment Logistics. When we can we aim to raise funds to procure incubators to help minimise premature baby deaths. As well as equipment such as hospital beds, sanitary pads etc.

  • Summer Reading Challenge. Speech and Language challenge in lower schools in remote villages.

  • Summer Writing Challenge. Poetry and short stories. Geared to capturing children’s imaginations in a fun, friendly environment.

  • Raise awareness of global warming, working in partnership with the youth development centre.
